CITY: It started in Dewsbury, then Retford, Colsterworth and now resides in Shareshill near Cannock/Wolverhampton.  Been there 4 years or so now.

Mandy and Wendy are the pretty faces who greet you on the door (except Halloween when they are usually pretty scary!!))

What is the music policy of the club?.

60’s and 70’s (mainly 60’s) Unknowns, semi-knowns, obscurities, rare and underplayed, quality oldies.  All we ask of the DJ’s is to play what you don’t hear week in week out everywhere else, use some imagination.  We realize you cannot go to far with the unknown etc so good quality oldies are in the mix but we try and steer clear of the same old same you hear every week.

Do you think that the DJ line up can still make people travel to one club? Does this affect your choice?

We hope it does, travelling to hear records you can’t hear anywhere else is what it used to be all about.  Many of the records owned by the DJ’s on the rosta aren’t widely available, by that I mean the internet, CD as well as a 45.  We are careful with the choice, we try to pick DJ’s who have something different or new to offer what isn’t already there and someone who won’t resort to the norm, someone with an imagination.  It is getting harder to find a DJ with something to offer that isn’t already on offer.

Do you take into account that people may travel to your club? Does this affect your choice?

I would think the majority of our crowd travel.  Doesn’t really affect our choice although we are mindful of what the guest will play but we try and stick to what Lifeline has been all about since its inception.

Have you ever made a mistake with one of the djs you have invited? (No need to name names!)?

Not that I can think of.

How do you decide the line up/rota for the evening?

By and large it has been the same for every night, I open up, then Cliff, Andy and Mick.  The guest usually chooses to go on around Midnight/1am.  Butch follows then Sam, Andy and or Mick and then Rob Smith sends them home.  We have a job getting Rob off the decks, we have to pull the plug otherwise he would be there all day as well.  His enthusiasm is a bit like Sam’s, both put all the younger ones to shame.

Does your venue support the club and what you are trying to do? What is the atmosphere like at the club?

The management are fully supportive and we have had no real problems.  Atmosphere is great when it is a full house, large dance floor with a balcony full of record dealers and those who like to people watch.

Who comes to you club, what´s the crowd like, busy dance floor?

The crowd is different every time with new faces every time, some return some don’t.  Dance floor once everyone has said there hellos is busy all-night.  The floor is ideal.

How would you encourage younger people to come (if you do?) to your club and to be more involved in the scene in general?

We have to trust in the music policy.  We are friendly and approachable, never any trouble at the venue and everyone there for the music.  We’ve had DJ’s from the popular younger orientated clubs, Paul Barker one that stands out and he did a great set, followed Butch too which is tough.  Youngsters have to be encouraged and they are more than welcome at Lifeline.

What was the best/worst moment in the clubs history?

The first few nights are as good an all-nighter I’ve attended, certainly since the 80’s.  The weekenders we held stand out too.  Worst night?  When I broke my elbow and was laid up in hospital so didn’t make it.  Seriously though, I can’t think of one.

All in all had it been worthwhile and rewarding running your club?

It has been more than worthwhile.

Have you ever thought about packing it all in!?

Yes but the feeling doesn’t last long. 

Or selling your record collection?

I’ve sold one, when I got married….big mistake!!

What record would you kill to have in your collection!?

Most of Butch’s!!

What new discoveries have been played for the first time at your club?

Too may to think off, most are still covered up.

Which are your favourite clubs, apart from your own of course!?

Boomerang at Thorne favourite soul night, Wilton favourite all-nighter.  Plenty of great venues around the country though.

Anything you would like to improve or change on the present scene? Or anything you don´t like? 

I’d like people to be a bit more open minded and promoters to get DJ’s to add a few lesser played tracks in the mix.  I’d like promoters to look at the bigger picture though and stop the clashing, start working together.

There are so many dos on every weekend now, is this a problem for you? Is it harming the scene and the more established nights?

Lifeline has been up to this year pretty fortunate with very few venues clashing.  But this year has been an up and down year with weekenders and other all-nighters having a detrimental affect on Lifeline.  Next year (2012) will be make or break, if the support isn’t there then the club won’t be there.  We have already cancelled one night because of one weekender changing its dates and other all-nighters.

Which up and coming djs do you rate for the next few years?

Paul Barker really impressed me this year at Lifeline.  Haven’t heard too many others who have the same confidence and approach to his set to be honest.  Will have to make a point of getting out and listening to some more youngsters next year.

What advice would you give to the young people who are starting out collecting records, playing records or promoting a club?

Above all else be yourself, use your imagination, set the trends and not follow them.  Just enjoy yourselves!

What 10 records define your club?

Too many to select ten, been so many rare exclusive records form the DJ’s that are just fantastic soul records.  I will be attempting to sort a list of some spins by past guests and residents.

Which is your favourite ender for the club?

I don’t have one to be honest.

There we met up with Team Rippoles, Dave, Jordi, Debbie & Glenda along with the other fellow UKspinner of the weekend Nick The Record.   

Waiting at the airport we were collected by two nice chaps whose names escape me & whisked through the beautiful Asturian countryside, arriving just under an hour later at The Palacio De Meras in the small picturesque town of Tineo. 

For those that have never been, the weekend is held in a former medieval palace which has been tastefully refurbished into a luxury hotel & spa. 

Once settled into our rooms it was down to the hotel bar, where we thought best to sample some of the fine local wines, ales & sidras whilst meeting & catching up with old friends. 

The Friday evening session soon came around after a delightful feast of fine Asturian fare including a rather bizarre selection of cold meats arranged in the shape of a butterfly!!

It took a little while to get going Friday night as friends who hadn’t seen each other for a while caught up but by midnight everyone seemed to be on the same level & in a party mood. 

From what I remember all the Dj’s played some cracking spots with an interesting mixture including rare Northern,60′s,70′s & 80′s soul,funk,Jazz,crossover & more! 

Can’t remember if I survived till the bitter end but I know I had a blinding night, followed by a blinding hangover!!

Fortunately help was at hand in the form of the luxury spa & pool! 

Sporting ridiculously small swimming briefs & blue shower caps Joel & I were re-invigorated with a swim,sauna & steam session. 

The hotel spa really is something else! Each guest gets a free spa session to use with their stay at the hotel. I would highly recommend anyone staying to go have a dip. 

If you do, just make sure the cord on your swimming pants is tied securely before getting near the underwater power jet……unlike me!!

Feeling like new men we ventured up the hill to the “The   Shot Bar”(a restaurant/bar with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside & mountains) for the afternoon’s frivolities! 

More great food & sidra(the local cider of the region, poured from a height in a special way to aerate the cider, enhancing the natural fizz & to be consumed at once)! This thankless task was perfomed as usual in style by Hosin & Leche, gracias gentlemen! 

More great Jazzfunk, Crossover, 70′s & 80′s tunes during the afternoon thanks to Areta & Herminio & some suspicious cattle rustling thanks to the Hobbits….

Saturday night started around 10pm with another Smörgåsbord of fabulous food, wine & company in the grand hall. Then is was next door for the Saturday allnighter, busier than Friday & a great atmosphere from the very start! 

The dancefloor was full all night, everyone was smiling & the sounds just kept coming!

Again wonderful sets from all the Dj’s! Great to hear Nick & Jordi as this weekend was the first time I’d ever heard them play & I liked what I heard! Always a pleasure to hear Dave Ripolles & Jadd too!

Joel also played some great stuff as did David, Juan, Josep A, Luisma, Herminio & Jaunvi! Have I missed anyone??

If I have I must say in my defence the gin & tonics were rather large at this juncture….

Sunday morning & back to the spa(a bit less vigor this time)…Dressed & went to lunch, fortunately in that order. 

Sunday lunch was the traditional “Fabada” served in the grand hall. An absolutely delicious lunch, but two nights of partying eventually & quite suddenly caught up with me, so I had to retire to my room for a traditional “lie down” immediately afterwards!!!

Apologies for not saying farewell to everyone who left after lunch as quite a few did.

Once suitably recovered it was back downstairs for a relaxing evening of drinking, chilling & spinning disks with the remaining hardcore who stayed for Sunday night too. More great tunes, booze, food & a lot of laughs!! 

A massive thank you to Luisma, Mencia, Benji(the hotel owner), all the friendly staff & everyone else that helped bring the weekend together, to Dru, Tracy, Pete, Maslinator & to all our friends(too many to mention) that made another brilliant, memorable weekend!!!

Here’s to another five wonderful years!!!!! If you haven’t experienced it yet, it’s about time you did!

Sobre el tema musical, fue todo un cocktail de sonidos, de estilos, de tempos y de épocas con mucha lógica y muy buen gusto dentro de esas seis horas por noche que nos permite la sala. El weekend, a diferencia del Movin’ On como club, tiene una política mucho más enfocada al Northern Soul, al Crossover y al Modern; digo yo que lo harán para llenar la sala ¿no? Pero bueno ese es otro tema con el que me despediré más abajo. Después de vaguear todo este 2011 por numerosos saraos sin mucho sentido a excepción de la reseñable noche con Keith Money y los GV, con eso que llaman la fe de capa caída, estas son mis impresiones del último Movin’ On weekend.

Sobre los djs sólo mencionaré muy por encima a tres como elección personal: Lars Bulnheim, Soul Sam y Butch. La verdad es que el ejercicio del segundo set del sábado de Butch le llegó muy profundamente a un servidor, dada su predilección por el sonido sixties mal grabado, uptempos y rarezas de Stafford como el tema de los Out of Sights (segundo calentón). Mark Dobson, Butch, estuvo en todo momento a gusto a los platos y pinchó, muy fiel a sí mismo, uptempos, y stompers ZAPATILLA; no escatimó en rarezas y nos volvió a deleitar con temas que mucha gente debió de escuchar por primera vez el sábado. Un sinfín de gracias. Mil gracias. Mi fe recuperándose en un 70%.

Soul Sam es uno de los djs más mediáticos habidos y por haber, una leyenda que ha pasado por el Wigan Casino y que durante décadas ha sabido abrazar tanto el Northern soul como el Modern soul, paseando su maleta a lo largo del Reino Unido y de Europa e innovando a base de House o de artistas de Soul contemporáneos; sí, es DIOS. Empezó su set del viernes advirtiéndonos de qué iba a ser capaz, primer tema: King George, en el otro plato calentando motores los anteriormente nombrados Flo Smogg; y un guiño al sonido del club con esa media hora de funk la primera noche. Cerró el último set del weekend y tuvimos el placer de deleitarnos con Mixed Feelings y Ellipsis; y con Jimmy Bo Horn como postre, el mundo volvió a parecer un lugar mejor durante una hora…Gracias fe casi recuperada.

Al último que voy a nombrar va a ser a Lars, para mí, dj favorito del fin de semana. Lars no es ningún desconocido, ha pasado por el Movin’ en ediciones anteriores y repitiendo weekend; quizá vaya siendo hora de que otros clubs nacionales o del Reino Unido le echen un ojo a este alemán que pincha principalmente Crossover, Funk, pero que también nos deleita con temas Rare 60s. Un habitual que entiende a la perfección la línea que sigue el club; Mahood y Santucci en sus respectivas visitas también lo entendieron. Algunos de los discos que puso el fin de semana fueron:

Mis alabanzas son pocas para este pedazo de dj que supo en todo momento dejar la pista calentita, evolucionando el sonido gradualmente con muy buen gusto, fijándose en todo momento en la gente, una de esas cosas que ya no hacen muchos djs, pinchar para la gente. No me voy a explayar demasiado.

En definitiva se ha hecho justicia, el Movin’ del sábado 3 de diciembre de 2011 ha sido una de las mejores allnighters a las que he ido. Emocionante al 100%, haciéndome recordar por qué estoy aquí. Armonía entre el buen ambiente de caras conocidas y el musicón que se nos venía encima. Todo fluía gracias al buen rollo, la amistad y complicidad de los habituales. Qué es el Soul sino eso. Parece que para otros se trata de otra cosa.

No se puede ir a todo eso, está claro, pero hay gente que no va a nada y critico esa incoherencia con sus gustos y demás. Gracias a Dios que muchos compartís conmigo esa manera de vivir el Soul, sin segundas intenciones; venir, vivirlo y marchar con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja.

No me voy a acordar ahora de los que no estaban, por una vez lo voy a hacer de los que sí estaban y agradecerles infinitamente todo el interés, ganas y amor por lo bien hecho. ¿Actitud? TODA. Detrás de un weekend de este calibre hay un trabajo muy duro y desde aquí felicito a Cristina, a Edu y al hombre en la sombra, Marcos Juandó. Una vez más lo habéis conseguido. Fe recuperada al 100%.

¿Cuál es la política musical del club? .

Soul en todas sus vertientes, desde R&B a soulful house, pasando por estilos paralelos como el funk, latin soul, funky bossa, dancefloor jazz, etc…

¿Cuáles son los motivos a la hora de elegir a los dj’s invitados?.

Que coincidan con la filosofía musical del club, que tengan capacidad comprobable de hacer un buen trabajo tras los platos y que sean personas con cierta calidad humana (es decir, que no sean unos gilipollas)

¿Creéis que el factor dj sigue importando para que la gente viaje a vuestro club?.

Definitivamente, aunque nuestra idea es intentar ampliar el espectro de público a gente local de Barcelona con interés real en el soul. Como club bimensual que somos, no podemos depender únicamente de amigos que nos visiten desde otras ciudades y siempre hemos tenido un cierta vocación proselitista, de presentar una propuesta de club que permita que público que venga por primera vez se interese en lo que es el soul.

¿Alguna vez habéis pensado que os habíais equivocado con el dj invitado?.

Equivocado no, pero es cierto que hay gente que plantea sus sesiones de manera mejor que otros, ya sea por falta de nervios, experiencia, etc… Pero no tenido nunca la sensación de que alguien no intentara agradar al público que tenía delante, que, en definitiva, es para lo que está un DJ

¿Cómo decidís los turnos de los dj’s?.

Casi siempre es una cuestión de última hora, intentamos que haya un balance estilístico y de tempos según las horas disponibles para pinchar. Nosotros nos reservamos la media hora de warm up inicial y otra media hora a eso de las 2:30 por si hiciera falta decantar o nivelar tempo o estilo para un lado o para otro.

¿Los locales apoyan el club? .

No tanto como nos gustaría, pero entendemos que la oferta de clubs actual en Barcelona es grande. El hecho que la gente se desplace hasta donde está el Jazz Room en una ciudad como Barcelona, en la que todo club pasado la Diagonal casi depende de los habituales del barrio, nos indica que el que viene al Movin ‘ On es porque realmente tiene un cierto interés. En cualquier caso, sería ideal que más gente dentro de movidas 60′s o skinhead en Barcelona vinieran al Movin’, pero nuestro club no se adhiere a ninguna corriente estética, es un simple club musical, por lo que es más difícil arrastrar a “no conversos” al mismo.

¿Qué tipo de asistentes soléis tener en el club?.

Veteranos y novicios de la escena soul estatal; habituales de clubs de música negra de Barcelona (Marula, Boiler o Clandestino) y, de vez en cuando, algunos foráneos.

¿Cuál es la atmósfera del club?, ¿El público baila?.

Sí, a partir de la 1:30 el ambiente es casi siempre muy bueno…sólo hace falta poner algunos aspersores en las esquinas y la pista estará llena antes

¿Hacéis algo especial para buscar gente joven o ajena a la escena?.

Intentamos tener lo que es cartelería y flyers preparados para el Boiler anterior al Movin’; también los tenemos en las tiendas del centro de Barcelona y vamos ampliando el mailing cada vez más, la promo de Facebook es bastante efectiva.

¿Qué os anima a seguir con el club?.

Nos hace ilusión traer a gente nueva a pinchar, creemos que una ciudad como Barcelona tiene que tener algún club mínimanete decente donde escuchar rare soul. Y, claro, el feedback de la gente que viene, que por lo general es muy bueno.

¿Cuál ha sido vuestro mejor/peor momento como club?.

Yo soy muy de sufrir gratuitamente, así que hasta que la cosa no comienza a tener color a nivel asistencia sufro en cada Movin’…Los mejores momentos? Los Weekends, en los que la variedad y cantidad de gente es mayor; el traer a los hermanos Ripollés a pinchar a Barcelona por primera vez; las Saturday Soul Sessions en que ha habido bailoteo, los sets funk de George Mahood, el “momento Marismeño” con Andy Davies en el Café Noir, el Santucci en full effect…en fin, momentazos varios y variados. Tenemos mucha ilusión por traer a Soul Sam en Diciembre!

¿Os creéis recompensados por todos estos años?.

Definitivamente sí, el tiempo que le dedicamos al Movin’ queda compensado por la posibilidad de traer a Barcelona los mejores Dj’s de rare soul que existen

¿Alguna vez habéis pensado en abandonar?.

Movin’ On se dejó de hacer durante año/año y medio, creo recordar…en la actualidad no, espero que sigamos con ganas de seguir haciéndolo durante muchos años

Y,¿ en vender vuestra colección de discos?.

Eso ya se verá, la vida da muchas vueltas…si uno está más o menos metido en el mundillo de la compra y venta de discos la necesidad imperiosa de mantener tu colección al completo se relativiza mucho.

¿Por qué disco te privaríais de otras cosas?.

Esos tiempos de spaghettis y lata de atún ya han pasado, todos tenemos una edad…

¿Qué nuevos descubrimientos han sonado por primera vez en vuestro club?.

No creo que hayan habido muchos discos que hayan sonado por primera vez en el Movin’, tendría que preguntarle a Butch al respecto, pero sí recuerdo especialmente dos temas que escuché por primera vez en el Movin’: uno, el “Gangster boy” de Butch y el otro en Harvey Scales de George Mahood.

¿Cuáles son tus otros clubs favoritos?.

En España: Greenvillage, por afinidad estilística y de concepto; S4R porque siempre es un lujo fiestear en el Ercilla, porque todo está muy bien montado y porque todo el weekend tiene una atmósfera muy relajada pero a la vez divertida y The Boiler porque es una apuesta exitosa sin tener que renunciar a nada a nivel musical…en Tineo no he estado, por lo que, evidentemente, no puedo opinar.

¿Qué cosas mejorarías o no te gustan de la escena actual?.

Me parece que en España tenemos muy pocas cosas de qué quejarnos: la mayoría de la gente en la escena soul se lleva bien, no tenemos discusiones estúpidas respecto a diferentes políticas musicales  y se respeta a cada DJ por lo que aporta a una fiesta, no por el valor de sus discos ni por el tiempo que lleva en esta escena. Creo que, viniendo los componentes de esta escena de diferentes backgrounds, hemos llegado a un consenso de lo que buscamos en una fiesta: aprender, respetar y pasarlo bien.

¿Que hayan tantas fiestas todos los fines de semana es bueno para la escena o perjudica la asistencia de las allnighters ya establecidas?.

Es bueno para que cada uno elija según gustos e intereses, así nadie se puede dar por engañado ni tiene que tragar con música que no le gusta. Ojalá hubiera pasta para ir a todo, pero eso no es culpa de los organizadores…siempre que respeten fechas ya pre-establecidas y usen un mínimo de sentido común a la hora de planear sus eventos.

¿Qué tres dj’s creéis que marcaran tendencia los próximos años?.

Pues ni idea, pero imagino que Butch siempre estará ahí como referente; George Mahood tiene el gusto, las ganas de investigar  y, sobretodo, una actitud muy aperturista y novedosa y seguro que saldrá algún chaval joven que comenzará a dar que hablar…

¿Qué consejo daríais a los jóvenes que empiecen a pinchar o promover fiestas?.

Joder, no sé, consejos….pues que crean en lo que hacen, que sean coherentes con su concepto de club y que respeten y aprendan de los demás.

¿Qué 10 discos definirían vuestro club?.

No sé si lo definen, pero temas que siempre han tenido éxito en el Movin’:

No me gustan mucho esas ideas así encorsetadas tipo “el tema que siempre tiene que sonar al final”. Pues dependerá de cómo haya ido la noche, de qué se haya puesto en la última media hora, de qué forma le guste al Dj invitado acabar…Como digo, a gusto del invitado.

¿Próximas fechas? .

2 y 3 de Diciembre, MOVIN’ ON WEEKEND: SOUL SAM – BUTCH – LARS BULNHEIM – STEVE GUARNORI & MORE…
